Moving clockwise, each note is a perfect 5th above the previous one (for example, from C to G). Moving counterclockwise, each note is a perfect 4th above the previous one (for example, from C to F). This symmetry between 4ths and 5ths makes the Circle of Fifths a powerful tool for understanding the relationships between notes and keys.
